Thomas A. Nelson Sr age 82 passed on to his eternal home on November 11, 2024.
Tom was born April 12 1942; in a country home near Hector, Minnesota. Tom went to school in Hector where he played baseball, football and basketball, he loved sports. After his graduation he started working for Alpha Telephone Construction where Tom worked as a lineman. The Job took him to many states and locations before it brought him to Caney, Kansas. Tom decided to stay in Caney after Tom and Carolyn Lessman started dating. They were married the following year in January of 1964. Tom worked various jobs before he started with Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville. After he retired from Phillips, he worked for Aid Association For Lutherans, for health reasons, he retired again. His last job was probably his favorite when he got to be an assistant basketball coach with his son Tom Jr. Tom loved working with kids. Tom was president of Jaycees and Caney Lions club. He served on the City Council. Tom helped form a Tennis Association, there was as many as 85 members. Tom was very active in the Lutheran Church where he served in many ways. Tom was a baptized child of God. He passed from death to life because he had trust in the redemption won by Christ our Lord and Savior.
He was preceded death by his parents Alvie and Ruth Nelson and a sister Julie. Tom loved and valued his family. They were always in his thoughts and prayers.
Tom is survived by his wife Carolyn of the home and his children. Son Tom Jr. (Anissa) Nelson of Caney, daughter Kristi (Craig )Rucker. of Burdett Ks, daughter Kim (Kevin) McIntosh of Caney. Grandchildren; Phillip (Whitney) Nelson of Liberty Missouri. Desiree (Marquise) Johnson of Indepence Ks, Mitch Rucker of Lawrence Ks, Sam ( Katie) of Dodge City Ks, Addie (Danny) Hodge of Olathe Ks. Thatcher Lackey of McClouth Ks, Jasper (Grace) of Lawrence Ks, Tanner McIntosh (Jordan) of Indepence Ks. Kolbi (Jonathan) Estes of Caney Ks, Kyndal (Wyatt) Turney of So. Coffeyville Ok. Great grandkids are Jude Nelson, Jyrus and Jael Johnson, Murphy McIntosh & Blakely and Bishop Turner, Huck Estes, Crue, Collins, Sunny Turney. Tom is also survived by four brothers Ted of Wisconsin, Tim of Austria, Terry and Tony (Rhonda) both of Bartlesville, and sister-in-law Kathleen Heitman (Fred). Many nieces and nephews.
Family requests that in lieu of flowers any memorials given be made out to Harry Hynes Hospice or the Trinity Lutheran Church in Caney, KS.
