Marge Ann Carra, a beloved mom, friend, and figure in her community, passed away on November 18, 2024, at the age of 93. Born on February 13, 1931, in Sioux City, Iowa, Marge exemplified the spirit of humility and generosity throughout her life.
Marge's career showcased her entrepreneurial spirit and diverse talents. She began her working life as a migrant fruit picker for twelve years before transitioning to the publishing world with a successful Mail Order Magazine that she ran for a decade. Following that chapter of her life, she entered the printing industry with a Print Shop that she owned for five years. Marge was always evolving and not afraid to try new things. Most of her work life involved types of self-employment which unfortunately did not pay much, but she had the opportunity to meet a lot of people. She really enjoyed that aspect of it more than money.
Upon relocating to Kansas with her family, Marge opened a second-hand clothing and used bookstore in Caney, Kansas which she operated for 25 years, becoming a cherished fixture of the local economy. This allowed her to spread knowledge and foster a love of reading in others. It was said that she started with nothing but built a welcoming haven for anyone she came into contact with, always ready to lend a hand to those in need, even at her own expense. Her kindness and dedication to helping others left a lasting impression on all who knew and loved her.
Beyond her professional achievements, Marge had several interests that brought her joy. She loved crocheting, which earned her many different county fair awards, which she cherished as proud accomplishments, and enjoyed solving picture puzzles while she was able to. An admirer of Caney history and knowledge, she often took leisurely walks around the town, admiring its rich environment. Her passion for local history was evident when she served as a tour guide at the Independence Museum, where her enthusiasm for sharing knowledge shone brightly. Additionally, she contributed articles to the Caney newspaper, writing about her experiences and insights from her involvement in her tractor club, reflecting her vibrant community spirit and personality. Marge was also very passionate about animals, especially stray cats and dogs.
Marge was also an honorary member of the CVPA Caney Valley Power Association in Caney and organized the Quilt Judging contests for the ladies that had husbands in the club.
She is survived by her loving sons, George McCorkell, Gary Hinote, and David Hinote, who carry forward her legacy of kindness.
Marge is preceded in death by her young daughter, Rosalie Hinote, her parents, Leslie McCorkell, and Helen Boerger, and her husband who she loved very dearly, John Calvin Carra.
Marge A. Carra will be remembered not only for her contributions to her community but also for the warmth and compassion she radiated throughout her life. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
