June Mantooth, a modern-day Pioneer Woman, was born January 2, 1928 to Ralph and Ruby McAfee on their farm/ranch, which was located west of Sedan, KS. This is where she acquired her homemaking skills. Learning to garden, hunt and fish, and preserve her garden produce by canning and making jams. June loved teaching her children these life skills.
June met Hugh Mantooth at a dance in Elgin, KS. Hugh was wearing his Marine Corp uniform and looking sharp and when June saw him, she said “I’m gonna marry that young man!”. They married on February 9, 1946, and honeymooned in Paris, TX. Soon thereafter Hugh reported to a new duty post in Chicago and June returned to Sedan. Later June joined Hugh in Chicago. Their first-born child was born while they were in Chicago.
Hugh and June had six children during their marriage.
1) son Hugh Brooks Mantooth II (Deceased), wife Carla Mantooth, son Bradley Van Mantooth (Deceased), wife Lisa Mantooth, son Brentley Craig Mantooth, wife Eloisa, son Bernard “Bunny” Lee Mantooth, wife Teresa, daughter Lana Lucine Mantooth, husband David Thompson, daughter Lisa Marcel Mantooth, husband Dr. Robert Shively
Hugh and June raised 6 children while Hugh served his country in WWII and Korea and in peace time. Hugh didn’t meet his first daughter, Lana, until she was 13 months old as he was fighting in Korea.
After Hugh retired from “The Corp”, they moved their family from Oceanside, California to Caney, KS in 1962. Soon thereafter they moved to their ranch in the Sand Hills and lived there until they moved into Caney in 1994. They resided in town until their deaths.
Love and family were June’s priorities in life. She lived for her family and she loved family gatherings and preparing excellent meals on all special days and holidays.
A visitation will be held at Potts-Caney on Monday, November 20, 2023, with family receiving visitors from 5 pm – 7 pm.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at 10 am at Potts Chapel – Caney with burial to follow at Sunnyside Cemetery in Caney.
