Caney

John Clinton Matthews Jr., known to most as Bubba or Bub passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, in Caney, Kansas.

Bubba was born on September 2, 1987, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Bubba was a proud graduate of Caney Valley High School in 2006. While in school, he was member of the baseball, football, and power lifting teams. From a young age he was always working and going out of his way to help others.

In high school, he and his dad John Sr. had a mowing business. Bubba carried on that tradition with his son Ben, starting up Bullpup Lawn Services. In March of 2018 Bubba started working full time at Bullpup Lawn Services, doing what he loved to do, helping people while beautifying Caney.

When Bubba wasn’t mowing, he loved fishing, and drawing. Not many people know how talented he was at pencil drawing. His favorite hobby was coaching any team that Ben was on. Bubba coached Ben's baseball teams but even when he was not coaching, he was on the sidelines, using any free time to help Ben practice. He drove him to every event, never missed a game. He became like family to all the boys on the baseball team he coached. You would often see him with a truck full of boys, picking up and dropping off for practices. Bubba and Ben shared a love of the Steelers and OU football. They really did just about everything together- travelled to see the ocean, mowing, playing baseball and football, playing video games, going to the river and fishing. Ben was Bubba's whole life from the minute he was born.

He is preceded in death by his father, John Clinton Matthews Sr. Bubba’s memory will live on with his son, Benjamin Matthews of Caney. A Celebration of Bubba’s Life will be held in true Bubba fashion at the Caney baseball field on Thursday, July 21st at 7:30 PM. Please dress in your favorite baseball team or Caney Valley Bullpup attire. Friends are asked to sit in the grandstands or to bring a chair. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested a memorial contribution be made to Community National Bank for savings for Ben.
