Deloris Jean Vaughan

March 31, 1936 — December 29, 2024

Deloris Jean Vaughan of Caney, KS passed away on Sunday December 29, 2024, while residing at the Caney Guest Home Estates at the age of 88 where she had lived the past three and a half years. She was born March 31, 1936, near Caney to parents Loris and Nellie Corle Moore. She was the oldest of their children with 5 younger brothers. She was raised on the family farm northwest of Havana, KS until she was 14 years of age. She then moved into Caney to the care of Mrs. Detre so she could attend high school in Caney. It was there she met and fell in love with her future husband.

She and Richard Howard Vaughan were married on July 11, 1953, in Caney. They shared 61 years together until his death on February 28, 2015. They lived most of their married life in Caney area raising their children there.

Deloris worked different jobs in her early career which included various cooking jobs at the local Dairy Bell, the USD 436 school system, and the Caney Hospital. With this experience, she decided to go back to school in 1975 to get a degree as a Registered Dietician. She labored through 2 years at Coffeyville Community College earning her associate's degree and the 2 years at Pitt State University for her bachelor's degree. She then went for one more year of advanced studies at Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS for her master's degree. With that in hand she worked at the local hospital and nursing home as their dietician along with a stint at a nursing home in Independence, KS. She bought an ice cream store "The Peppermint Stick" and added donuts and meals to the menu, running her own business for a few years in the mid 1980's. She retired in 1998 as she and Richard made plans to move to Pittsburg, KS. They stayed there for 6 years before returning to Caney.

She was active with raising her children while also playing on a women's softball team, gardening, doing needlepoint, crocheting, and was an avid reader. All of these fun things were added to her full-time job outside the home. She and Richard had several friends that they enjoyed playing cards with and they would play for hours on a Saturday evening. With her children moving into adulthood, all these activities and her return to college she took on the role of mother again by taking custody of her granddaughter Michelle as her own.

She attended different churches throughout her life, but many years were spent at the Eastside/First Southern Baptist Church in Caney. This is where she brought her children to study and learn about God. Later in life she attended the Cowboy Church and the past three years spent time attending church at the Dearing Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband Richard, her parents, granddaughter Mandy Vaughan and her brother Dean Moore.

Those left to honor her memory are her children Rick Vaughan of Caney, Randy Vaughan of Tulsa, OK, Gene and wife Kim Vaughan of Caney, Ann and husband Dr. Michael Salrin of Earlsboro, OK, and Dana Vaughan of Texas and Michelle and Husband Jim Laidler. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 13 great-great grandchildren and by brothers Larry Moore of Coffeyville, KS, Walt Moore of Havana, KS, Lyall Moore and Ron Moore both of Winfield, KS.
